Dresden is the capital of the state of Saxony in the east of Germany. It is situated on the river Elbe and is the third largest of the former East Germany cities after Berlin and Leipzig.
Much of the city of Dresden was destroyed during World War Two including the Frauenkirche. This church was left as a memorial for fifty years before its rebuilding was completed in 2005. Visitors to the region can also visit Dresden castle, the Ore mountains and at Christmas there is the festive Striezelmarkt.
