Newark Liberty International airport is often used by travellers heading into New York (despite being in a different state) but it also has great connections for those choosing to head away from the city towards Connecticut or Boston. It also has slightly easier connections for those heading in the direction of Niagara Falls. If you are flying into New York then it is always a good idea to compare flight prices for Newark, JFK and La Guardia as you may find you could make some savings.
Most of the major brands are located at Newark such as:
The car rental offices are all located at Station P3. From Terminal A there is a free Airtrain shuttle bus which leaves from outside Door 3 on the Departures level. It is possible to walk by following the 'Transit to the City' signs. When you reach Parking A garage you will need to take the escalator up to floor 1 and walk through to the Airtrain station. Take the train from there to Station P3. The walk takes about 15 minutes. From Terminals B and C please follow the signs that lead you to the Airtrain which you will need to take to Station P3. The cars are all parked close by.
There are a number of roads and bridges around New York which carry a toll. A few will allow you to pay by cash but others do not. You can rent a transponder for your vehicle from the rental company which will register any charges you incur. Then you pay these on your return to the car hire desk. If you choose not to have a transponder and you use a toll road, it can work out more expensive as many car hire companies will also charge you an admin fee on top.
