New York is a city with the ultimate wow factor. From The Statue of Liberty to Central Park to the Rockefeller Center. This is a city that is always awake with hundreds of restaurants, bars, clubs and enough shops to keep even the most enthusiastic bargain hunter happy. But outside of the bustle of Manhattan Island there is also some beautiful scenery in the state of New York, all within easy reach when you hire a car from JFK airport.
The warm and friendly Fire Island is less than 2 hours from JFK and a popular beach resort during the summer season. Head to the stunning Adirondack Mountains or if you don't fancy the 5 hour drive, the Catskill Mountains are closer. The famous Appalachian Trail is a big draw, you could head up there for an adventurous holiday. And unbelievably, Boston is only 4 hours drive away and with Cape Cod in the same direction - why not make a road trip of it?
As JFK is a busy international airport, there are a large number of suppliers who offer rental vehicles here including:
You can find car rental service desks on the arrivals level of each terminal at JFK. Some companies will offer a courtesy telephone which you can use to contact them directly.
To pick up your rental vehicle you will need to take the AirTrain from the terminal to the Federal Circle Station. Here there is a parking garage where all the rental cars are kept.
A transponder is a small device which attaches to windscreen of your car and records the charges you owe for your toll road use.
There are a number of toll roads in New York State and some of the bridges. There is an option to pay by cash in some instances but not in others. If you choose not to get a transponder you are likely to pay more as the car hire company may add an admin charge on top of any tolls you owe. So take a look at your planned route before you set out because you could save yourself some money!
