Shannon is situated in County Clare on the west coast of Ireland. It is a beautiful town sitting on the river which shares its name and is within easy access - just a 20 minute drive - from the popular city of Limerick. Galway, another city on the tourist trail, is just over an hour's drive to the north.
The west coast of Ireland has plenty to offer those who are just visiting, Castles such as Bunratty and Knappogue take you back in time. Sailing off the coast, or kayaking on the river for water lovers or golf course for those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land.
The Shannon area is well known for its hiking trails. It is just a 20-25 minute drive to the Loophead peninsula for access to cliff walks, the Loophead Lighthouse or the Bridges of Ross which, despite its name, is now only one natural sea arch. The other two have long since eroded away but still well worth a visit.
The coastal drive to Spanish Point or a trip to the historic towns of Adare or Ennis may take your fancy but be aware that driving around Ireland can often mean narrow, winding lanes. A close encounter with another car on a single track road can put your wing mirrors in danger so do consider taking out excess insurance to cover these!
Hiring a car from Shannon airport is a great starting point for any driving tour of Ireland or to reach areas on the west coast of Ireland with ease.
The car hire desks are situated within the arrivals hall at Shannon Airport. It is not a busy airport but allow yourself at least half an hour to get through baggage claim and customs when you make your booking. The cars are parked just a very short walk away - just a minute or so! - so no shuttle bus is required.
There are other companies - such as Sixt - located off the airport and shuttle buses are provided. The Sixt office is approximately a 7 minute drive away.
