An estimated £7bn worth of electronic gadgets including smart phones, cameras and DVD players will be taken on holiday this year making it even more vital to compare gadget insurance before departure.
Of this amount, £1.61bn will be completely uninsured as only 77% of British holidaymakers have travel insurance, AXA research found.
For those who are insured on travel insurance single item cover, most of the more expensive items will not be covered under this and home or travel insurance rarely covers items in hold luggage where 9% of people will pack some, or all, of their expensive electronic items.
"Our lifestyles are changing and we are carrying more and more high value, electronic items with us when we leave our homes - not just when we go on holiday," said Amanda Edwards, AXA home insurance.
"Unfortunately, these items are also very attractive to thieves and if you go anywhere without adequate insurance or fail to look after your property carefully outside the home you could find yourself footing a fairly hefty bill to replace it."
The research showed 83% of Brits take a camera on holiday, 55% a mobile phone, 18% a laptop and even the recently launched ipad with 5% unable to leave it at home.
Compare Gadget Insurance
With the average family taking two mobile phones with them abroad it is worth researching your mobile phone insurance before departure. For some who have phone insurance it may already be covered when taking it abroad, however not all do so it is important to check.
For other electronic items check individual insurance deals to find the best ones to cover the items you plan to carry with you. It may be worth for example taking out laptop insurance individually if it is the only expensive item you plan to take as opposed to paying more on your overall travel insurance.
