Inspired by the Olympics? Make sure your travel insurance will cover your sport or activity

Paris 2024 sees new sports for the Olympics. If you love to take part in sports on holiday, make sure you have insurance that will cover your travel plans.

The Paris Olympics has its opening ceremony on the 26th July so not long to go now! Along with the familiar sports are a few more recent additions to the programme as well as one that is brand new for 2024. If you are a sports fan and love to get involved when you are on holiday then the Olympics will give you plenty of inspiration.

We can help you find travel insurance which covers a wide range of sports and activities.

What should your sports travel insurance cover?

  • The number one rule when it comes to travel insurance is to buy it as soon you book your holiday. This ensures that you have cancellation cover in place immediately.

  • If you are travelling in a group, it can be beneficial for you to all have the same cover when it comes to sports. That way everyone can take part in the same activities (or not) and no one gets left out. The same goes for families. Ensure both adults and children are covered.

  • Read the conditions of cover carefully. Some sports may have reduced cover such as no personal accident cover or no personal liability cover in relation to that particular activity. Personal accident usually covers permanent disability or death. If there is no personal liability insurance then it is a good idea to check that the venue or company you are using has their own adequate liability cover. By using MoneyMaxim you can compare travel insurers and the cover they offer.

  • Many sports will only be covered if you are using the correct equipment or wearing safety gear. If you are not using a helmet or a lifejacket for example and have an accident, your insurer may not pay out. Check the requirements before you take part.

What is new for the 2024 Paris Olympics?

Have you ever heard of Breaking? It's a form of dance which originated in New York that involves some impressive moves such as windmills, the 6-step and freezes. It may be a dance style but it takes an incredible amount of strength so don't underestimate these athletes. Paris will see 16 men and 16 women battle it out for the first ever Olympic gold medal.

Sport Climbing, skateboarding and surfing are relative newcomers to the Olympic programme but they have already proved very popular. Sport climbing includes races up climbing walls that can take less than 6 seconds so don't look away! Skateboarding will see Team GB's Sky Brown back in action. Can she improve on her bronze medal from 2020?

Finding and comparing sports travel insurance is easy with MoneyMaxim as we can point you in the direction of insurers we know can offer great travel insurance for more hazardous pursuits.
