Are you headed to a New Zealand with a plan to go canoeing? Fancy a spot of white water rafting in Canada or mountain biking in Australia? We have several insurers on our panel who offer travel insurance with great coverage for sports and other pastimes. We detail them here.
As with all insurance policies, it is important to ensure that all areas of your holiday are included within your insurance policy and particularly so when you are keen on sports or those more daring pursuits. Read the terms and conditions of any travel insurance policy fully - most insurers list the sports they will cover - to check whether your chosen sport is covered. Sometimes you may have to pay an additional top up premium but this can be a small price to pay balanced against the chance of an injury and needing hospital treatment abroad.
What our Experts say
"Do you love to take part in sport when you are on holiday? Many standard travel insurance policies cover some sports and activities as standard but not the more adventurous ones. If you want to have wider cover and more freedom to have a go at activities then opt for a travel insurer who can offer upgrades on their sports cover. Sometimes for an additional premium you can be insured for many more sports."

If you have just taken out a policy and realise that it doesn’t fully cover your requirements don’t worry. Remember you have a 14 day cooling off period with any insurance policy you take out. It is a good idea to look at all different types of insurance policy to make sure it fits with your holiday. For example, if you go on more than one holiday, it may be a good idea to look at an annual policy instead of a single trip policy.
If you are travelling in a group, you can all opt for the same insurer. That way everyone will have the same level of cover and will all be able to take part in the same activities. No one needs to be the only one missing out!
Insurers may specify that certain equipment needs to be used for you to be covered. This could include items such as a helmet or a lifejacket. If you do not wear or use the stated equipment then you are unlikely to have a valid claim should you have an accident.
Insurers may provide cover for some activities but exclude cover for personal accident or personal injury so read the terms and conditions carefully. There may be an insurer on our panel who offers more comprehensive cover for that particular activity so do compare your options.
If you are opting for an annual policy then you may have more sports you wish to consider. Wintersports, for example, may be added for an additional fee, if you are likely to use your policy to cover a skiing holiday too.
These travel insurance policies cover you for participation in sports on a leisure basis. If you are participating in sports on a professional level you will need the appropriate insurance.
