Since 24 consumers are sending four times as many texts per day and spending almost a quarter of their time on the internet on social networking sites and watching almost four hours of TV, Ofcom research revealed.

The study also showed consumers use different types of media simultaneously - particularly the under 25s, although almost half of 55s now have broadband at home.

"For the first time we can see just how central media and communications are to our lives - on average we use them for nearly half our waking hours," said Peter Phillips, Strategy & Market Developments Ofcom Partner.

"The divided between younger and older people's use of technology is starting to narrow as more older people are getting online and finding that things like email are very important to them."

While we are doing more via communication technology we are spending less due to the increasing competition in the market. For the fifth year in a row communication services spending has decreased.

The monthly spend on communication services fell almost 1% to £91.24 as consumers buy their services in discounted bundles as opposed to one off items.

"The shift that we have witnessed in the communications landscape over the last five years has been phenomenal," said Ernest Doku, uSwitch.com communications expert.

"Mobile phones are now a life-essential."
