Zambia has a lot to offer - from the spectacular Victoria falls, Zambezi river - popular for water sports like white water rafting, kayaking and bungee jumping - to wildlife safari trips. Do make sure you have appropriate travel insurance for the activities you intend to do - many more adventurous sports are not covered by standard travel insurance.

Make sure you read the FCO advice about driving in Zambia. Road quality is variable with frequent pot-holes, and roads and bridges can be washed away in the rainy season. Zambians drive on the left but driving standards can be poor and driving at night outside cities is not recommended.

Most car hire in Zambia comes with collision damage waiver, theft waiver and third party liability cover included. Excesses are high - typically over US$2,000 and tyres, windscreen and underside of the vehicle won't be covered as standard. Additional insurance to cover this can be expensive - US$20-25 per day is normal so consider purchasing a worldwide car hire excess policy before you go.

Car hire in this part of the world does not normally include unlimited mileage - 100km per day is more usual so, if you are likely to cover large distances, it would be worth checking the additional mileage rates.
