An International Driving Permit is compulsory for car hire in Turkey if you don't have a photocard licence. You may also find that an IDP is required under the terms and conditions of the rental agreement for car hire so please check this before you travel.
Car rental normally comes complete with full collision damage protection insurances, although there may be an excess and the standard exclusions of tyres, windows and underside of the car. Save up to 90% of the cost of purchasing additional protection for this using the MoneyMaxim car hire insurance comparison service. Though Turkey is not technically in Europe (depending on your definition), most car hire insurers do cover Turkey within their territorial description of European policies. Running a quote to cover the specific country will display those we understand do so.
The foreign office travel advice website should be referred to for up to date information about travel safety and any areas to avoid. Don't forget that travelling against the advice of the FCO can invalidate some travel insurances.
While on the subject of travel insurance, Turkey has become a destination for lovers of adventure sports. If you want to take part in one of them, do ensure your travel insurance covers your chosen activity.
