The car hire desks at Antigua airport are conveniently situated next door to each other in a small office right outside the terminal building (see our picture above).
Your first taste of the customary Antiguan hospitality is likely to be at the rental desks where you will be greeted by a row of beaming smiles.
It is, however, important to have done your homework before you arrive so you know exactly what to expect and what you will be looking for alongside your rental agreement.
Unless you are from the island you will need to buy a temporary Antiguan Driving Permit - valid for three months it will cost around US$20. Your car rental company will, having seen your full driving licence from your home country, arrange it for you. An International Driving Permit is not required.
If you have booked a car either to pay for on arrival or on a pre-paid basis, check whether Collision Damage Waiver insurance is included. Standard rates normally exclude this cover, although packages pre bought in the UK tend to include it (but not always). Your best option is to have pre bought a CDW policy before travelling - through our car hire insurance comparison service you will find policies from about £3 to £5 a day (or an annual policy from around £50, compared to the US$10 - US$15 per day you will be charged at the desk.
Independent policies also insure damage to the wheels, tyres, glass and underbody of the vehicle which are excluded from the car rental firms cover. Given the sometimes poor conditions of the roads in Antigua this can prove to be invaluable cover.
You may also want to consider supplementary liability insurance which tops up your third party liability insurance to US$1m. Again, available through the MoneyMaxim service, these provide reassurance if you find the insurance provided by your rental company is insufficient to cover a major accident.
Finally, excess insurance is also offered by the MoneyMaxim service - this will cover an excess if your car hire agreement already provides CDW, but leaves you liable for the first part of any claim. The independent policies (which can be bought through the above link as well) cover damage to your rented car in Antigua for those excluded areas mentioned above. When you run a quote just make sure you select Antigua as your country of hire.
