Car Hire in Russia

General
Drivers will need an international driving permit to hire a car in Russia.
Dipped lights must be used in the daytime in non-built-up areas.
It is not allowed to use your horn in towns.
Car Hire Insurance
Collision damage waivers and theft waivers are normally included in car hire and the excesses are fairly modest by European standards but still upwards of £300 (for a compact car, more for larger vehicles) and tyres, windscreen and undercarriage would be excluded. To protect yourself from these you can purchase a car hire excess insurance policy.
Do check the amount of third party cover your rental provides. We've seen as little as €100,000 to cover all property, medical and compensation costs. That is a fair amount of cover, and medical and compensation costs in Russia aren't in the same league as American so many may be happy with that level.
If, however, you are not happy with the level of third party offered, Supplementary Liability Insurance (SLI) can be purchased with a car hire excess insurance policy. This can top up the level of third party cover provided by the car hire firm to US $1 million. Do check the terms of the policy however as many SLI policies only come into effect in the USA and Canada so you need to choose one that gives worldwide coverage.
