Car hire in Reunion Island

Driving Licence

An international driving permit is recommended and often required by car hire companies (especially older style non-photo card licences).

As an overseas region of France, Reunion islanders drive on the right and most traffic laws are similar to the French mainland.

Fuel prices in Reunion are state controlled with maximum sale prices. Currently these are set at 1.71 euros per litre for unleaded.

Local charges

There is a local airport fee of about €24 which may or may not be included in the price of the rental - so check the rental terms.

Car hire insurance

Car hire normally comes inclusive of collision and theft waivers and third party liability cover. There will normally be an excess on the waivers - typically around the 500-1000 Euro mark for a compact car, though the usual exclusions will apply including windows, tyres and the underside of the vehicle. Although you will probably be offered additional cover for these at the rental counter you can get the cover cheaper by purchasing your own cover beforehand from the MoneyMaxim car hire comparison service.
