Driving Licence Requirements
According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office UK drivers can drive for up to 6 months using a UK licence and up to 1 year with an International Driving Permit. The AA say you need an IDP in Peru. The rental company may require one too so check the terms of your car hire. It may also help to have an IDP if you are stopped by the police.
Car Hire General
Most car hire agreements allow for a limited mileage allowance - typically 200km per day. If you're likely to go over this, it's worth comparing rates for excess mileage as they can vary considerably.
Car Hire Insurance
CDW & Theft waivers may be included or may be optional extras so check the terms of your car hire carefully as it isn't necessarily the cheapest deals that have the least cover!
Do check that you are comfortable with the level of third party cover provided with your car hire. It is often restricted to $100,000 for all property damage and personal injury. If you are found to be at fault in a serious accident you will be personally liable for any losses beyond whatever cover has been provided so consider purchasing a supplementary liability insurance (SLI) policy to protect you. Be aware that some SLI policies only cover USA and Canada so select one offering either the Americas (& check definitions) or worldwide cover.
