Driving Licence Requirements

A standard UK driving licence is usually fine in Norway with no need for an International Driving Permit. Some car hire companies may insist on a photocard licence so if you still have a paper licence then seriously consider an IDP. You will also need proof of insurance with your car hire documents.

General driving conditions

Dipped headlights should be used at all times. Norwegians drive on the right. Drink-drive alcohol limits are much lower than the UK at 0.02% against our 0.08% which effectively means no drink before driving.

Winter tyres must be fitted during winter - approximately 1st November to 15th April but dates vary year to year.

Many motorways and city centres are covered by an automatic toll system, click here for more information on the Norwegian tolls.

Car Hire General

The Norwegian car rental market has a lot of additional surcharges which can rapidly inflate the cost of car hire.

Some car hire agreements have maximum mileage allowances which can be restrictive (SiXT & Budget can limit you to 100km / day) and quite expensive once you have exceeded the limit.

If you're renting in winter, winter tyres will be required, most include this in the rate but check as there are some exceptions (eg Avis)

Payment for toll roads will usually be made through the hire company at the end of the rental, but some companies (eg Alamo) make a mandatory additional Toll Road Administration fee.

Car Hire Insurance

Car hire will normally include full insurances but excesses on collision and theft waivers can be quite high - around the £900-1000 for a compact class car so make sure you're covered with appropriate car hire excess insurance.
