Most car hire companies will accept a UK licence, so you won't normally need an international-driving-permit but check the rental terms and conditions because some car hire companies may insist on it.

Namibians drive on the left. Many roads are just gravel/dirt roads rather than tarmac so SUV or 4x4's are popular for their additional ground clearance.

Most car hire through our site in Namibia comes with collision damage waiver and theft waivers included. Excesses can be pretty heavy - we found around £1750 for a compact car rising to over £3,000 for an 8 seater people carrier. Exclusions to collision damage waivers can render them redundant as many will hold you responsible for any damage done to the car unless another car was involved. Administration charges of NAD500-750 (around £40-60) if the car is damaged are common. Damage to tyres, windows and the underside will always be excluded unless additional cover is purchased.

Due to the many exclusions on damage waivers The Foreign and Commonweath Office recommend taking out your own fully comprehensive cover - select CDW when comparing car hire excess insurance.

Do watch out for compulsory additional charges in Namibia, things like Airport Fees at around 11%, Tourism Levy at 1% and Contract Fees of 40-60NAD (£3-4) may be included in the quoted rate or may be payable locally.

Cross border travel is allowed by many to selected countries usually for an additional fee and prior notice will be required. Fees vary greatly so can be a significant factor in the overall rental cost.
