Driving in Lithuania

An international driving permit is not normally required for UK licence holders to drive in Lithuania but do check with your car hire company to confirm.

Speed limits for cars are normally 50 km/h in built up areas and 90 km/h out of town unless otherwise indicated. Limits for dual carriageways and motorways change with lower limits for the winter season, 1st November to 1st April. The limits are 110 km/h and 100 km/h (winter) for dual carriageways and 130 km/h reducing to 110 km/h for winter on motorways.

Use of dipped headlights in the daytime is compulsory.

Drink drive limits are lower than the UK at 0.04% (compared to our 0.08%) with lower limits for new drivers.

Winter tyres are compulsory between 10th November and 1st April.

Car Hire in Lithuania

Collision damage waiver excesses tend to be in the €500 - €1,100 region for smaller cars but can be much higher for large or prestige cars. Protect this and any charges for damage to tyres, windscreens and underside of the car with car hire excess insurance.

Thankfully, and unlike other European countries, most winter car hire rates are shown inclusive of the winter tyres which must be fitted and sometimes ice scrapers and snow chains too. It's worth a quick check to make sure it's included as charges of €10 per day or more are common in other European countries.

SiXT often have mileage restrictions on their rentals of 100 km per day so, if you're likely to exceed this, you either need to calculate the additional mileage charges (they do show them clearly on their website) or opt to upgrade to an unlimited mileage rate in order to compare their prices with others.
