Car Hire

Typical surcharges for the country include but are not limited to premium location fees (US $15) and vehicle registration fee (US $1) which may or may not be included in the comparison price.

Collision Damage Waivers and Theft Waivers will normally (but not always) be included in car hire and you will usually be responsible for the first $500-$2200 of damage, depending on the size and type of car hired. Theft waivers may be up to 50% more. You will also be responsible for damage to tyres, wheels, windscreen and the underside of the car. Purchasing an appropriate car hire insurance policy before you go can protect you from all of these and is usually loads cheaper than purchasing from the car hire supplier at the desk.

Third party insurance provision is not as generous as we're used to in Europe, perhaps reflecting the respective costs of personal injury but we've typically found cover limited to US $500,000 for bodily injury or property damage.

You can top up locally provided cover to US $1 million with a Supplementary Liability Insurance (SLI) policy. If you wish to do this, select a policy which offers SLI cover worldwide (except your own country) as many SLI policies were built to service the American market and are only valid in the USA and Canada.
