Given the variable road surfaces in Belize, it is perhaps not surprising that SUVs and 4x4s are very popular vehicles to rent in Belize. In fact you may find they are the only types of car available to you when you run a search. They are pretty much essential if you have plans to visit the Gallon Jug, Lamanaj or Mountain Pine Ridge area of the Cayo District, or are travelling in the wetter time of year from June to November.
It is very common for car hire prices in Belize to be quoted without Collision Damage Waiver or Supplementary Liability Insurance included so, rather than leaving yourself open to the high priced locally provided policies, do consider taking out a policy through the MoneyMaxim Car Hire Comparison Service which allows you to select a policy covering these elements at a fraction of the rental firms quotes.
With only four significant roads in Belize, namely the Northern, Western, Southern, and Hummingbird highways you are unlikely to get too lost in the country. Although the country is only around 70 miles wide and 250 long, travelling is not a speedy affair, with even major roads being just one carriageway each way. This topped off with the fact that traffic calming measures are in place as you travel through many villages.
Also be aware that in Belize drivers who are looking to turn left on the country's major routes - ie across the oncoming traffic must first park right hand side of the road until all traffic (ie in both directions) has cleared.
When we made enquiries we found Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) locally costs up to £12 so standalone policies will almost certainly be cheaper - if taking one of these policies, do print it off as your rental company will want to see that you have cover. Additionally Liability Insurance tends to be limited - so check any cover with your rental firm and if necessary take an SLI (Supplementary Liability Insurance) policy to ensure you do not face an unaffordable bill if you have an 'at fault' accident. Again these are cheaper in almost all circumstances if bought through an insurer on the MoneyMaxim panel.
