It is wonderful that holidays are back but, in your rush to get to the airport, don't forget your travel insurance!
Many people believe that the main purpose of travel insurance is to cover things that could go wrong from the start of your holiday (such as flight cancellations) but your travel insurance is there for you from way before that. As soon as you buy a policy it can cover you should you need to cancel the holiday, perhaps because you are unwell or a family member passes away.
So buy your travel insurance as soon as you have booked your holiday.
1 The Small Print
We know, no one likes to read all those little words but there is no point in paying for a policy which maybe doesn't have baggage cover or excludes Morocco from the list of countries it covers when you are looking forward to a city break in Marrakesh. Will the policy you are considering work for your Mediterranean cruise or your skiing trip to Bulgaria?
2 The Cover
Following on from the small print is checking that the cover levels are high enough for your needs. Will you be able to replace your electronic devices? If you are taking the whole family then there could be a number of phones or gadgets to insure.
3 The Family
And talking of families, you may want to make sure that everyone is covered for all the activities they want to do. You may wince at the idea of bungee jumping but, if your teenagers want to have a go, you will need to make sure that that activity can be covered. Family travel insurance policies are available which can cover you all for the same things (just in case you change your mind about the bungee jumping).
4 Pre-Existing Medical Conditions
Nothing should stop you from enjoying a holiday and these days most conditions can either be included within a travel insurance policy or excluded (ie you are covered but not for any claims relating to that condition). The most important point to note here is that you are truthful with the insurer about any medical history you have. If not and you make a claim, you could find they won't pay out.
5 Price
By using our comparison service or by contacting the insurers via our specialist travel insurance pages, we hope you find a really good deal on your travel insurance. However, the price comes second to making sure you have the right cover for your needs. A travel insurance policy is there to make things easier if the worst should happen. If the cover is wrong then it may be no help at all.
