Travellers 65-74 are three times more likely to make a claim on their travel insurance than those in the age group 18-54 according to confused.com, accounting for the lack of options for this age group.

An 18-54 year old can secure a one week policy for just £5.81 whereas someone aged 65-74 is likely to pay three times this at an average of £17.98.

"This group of travellers shouldn't be tempted to take the risk of travelling without cover," said Steve Williams, Confused.com travel insurance head.

"Premiums do increase with age to reflect the fact that a greater number of claims are made, although the level of cover remains comparable, offering peace of mind in the event that a trip is cancelled or medical help is needed."
