Our guide is designed to identify whether you need cover at all and, if you do, which companies are the ones that will give you the cover you are after.
You might decide that you are well off enough to just replace it out of your own funds and, if that's the case, the answer is probably no! Additionally, you may decide that you are covered on your home insurance – and again that may well be the case. But please do review your policy carefully.
If you are relying on your home insurance make sure you have ‘all risks' cover which means that items are insured off your property and even abroad. Make sure that the total covered is enough for all your ‘portable valuables', and that your iPad is not over the maximum cover limit for computer equipment. We often see customers carry forward the same ‘all risks' limits from year to year, which probably covered a few bits of jewellery and a couple of watches a few years ago – completely forgetting that the kids are hopping on a train to school or college with iPhones, laptops and more besides. Lastly make sure you are comfortable with the idea that your no claims discount may be affected if you do have to claim on your home insurance – if your premium is hefty, it could be a sizeable incentive not to claim – hence negating the reason for insurance in the first place!
You may also be covered by your travel insurance policy when you are on holiday – but again check the limits – some may have great personal possession limits, but then the small print reveals that a laptop or iPad will only be covered up to £250 or, worse still, not at all.
There are a growing number of gadget insurers in the market, catering for every product from sat navs to iPhones.
In a separate article we cover mobile phone insurance. Otherwise we compare iPad, tablet, laptop and sat nav insurance below:
