The 25 percent who take their annual holiday at this time of year admit it is a good way to avoid peak prices, while 23 percent look for winter sun according to Halifax.

"Low season holidays hold a great deal of appeal for those that are looking to get away but still make the most of their money," commented Ken Stannard, Halifax director of credit cards.

As 11 million head abroad this winter the study estimated the total spend of getting to the destination of choice would be over £9 billion while a further £5 million is expected to be spent while on the holiday.

However, the survey revealed one in three are finding it harder to save the money for a holiday since the recession hit meaning 29 percent spend longer looking for the best deal, and 13 percent take up overtime at work to save up the cash.
