Recently the states of California, Florida and Ohio (other states are following suit) have changed the rules and now it is the responsibility of the driver to make sure that they have adequate liability insurance and not the hire company. So it is possible you could rent a car in one of these states without any primary liability insurance being included and not be aware. If this is the case an SLI policy may only offer limited cover or provide no cover at all.
Always check your car hire to find out what insurance is included as US and Canadian hires purchased in the UK may have the main insurances included already (CDW, Theft and Third Party). Policies are also available for those just wanting Collision Damage Waiver cover.
