According to data from a leading price comparison website, around 40% of British pet owners take their dogs or cats on car journeys regularly. Even celebrities such as Adele, Madonna and Lady Gaga are known for carrying their pets with them during road trips.
A quarter of pet lovers state that their animals are happy as long as they are amused. Techniques employed to achieve this are numerous. Owners mainly either talk to them or take pet toys along on the journey. According to the study, Radio 1 is the top choice for in-car pet entertainment, followed by Radio 2 and 5 Live.
Pets on the road: bad practices
Despite most of the trips passing without incident; some practices may put both the animals and the drivers at risk.
12% of pet owning motorists said they let their canines stick their head out of the window on the journey; however, this is certainly not recommended by vets.
"Dogs might really enjoy the sensation of having their heads out of the window but it is dangerous for them,” said Paula Boyden, Veterinary Director at Dogs Trust.
A further 10% of pet owners said they had almost had a near miss when driving because of their pet's behaviour in the car.
To avoid these situations, it is fundamental to have insurance for both your pet and your car. Pet insurance will protect your beloved friend from any incident that may happen, whereas car insurance will cover your expenses in case you have a mishap while driving.
