What is Covered by Baggage and Personal Accident Cover?

We explain what a baggage and personal accident policy is, when you need it, and what it will cover you for.

Baggage Cover

This is normally covered by good quality travel insurance, and baggage may be covered by a home contents policy if 'all risks' cover has been taken but, in addition, is often offered by companies who sell car hire excess insurance.

This cover can, however, be beneficial if you are renting a car in your home country and baggage is not covered by the 'all risks' section of your home contents insurance.

Baggage or personal possessions cover is designed to cover items stolen or damaged in the course of your vehicle being broken into. Normally items are only covered if they are locked in a boot or in a covered luggage area or the glove box. Details of the companies offering this cover will be displayed when you request a quotation on the MoneyMaxim car hire insurance comparison service.

Select the 'Details' button next to any policy in your results table and the level of baggage cover will be detailed under the relevant section.

Personal Accident Cover

Personal accident cover pays out if you are severely injured or die in an accident in the hired car. Policyholders receive a tax-free lump sum if they are involved in an accident resulting in the loss of one or more limbs, one or both eyes, the loss of use of any of the above, or some other form of permanent disability.

If you are travelling abroad, you may have similar cover on your travel insurance policies, and may also be covered on a credit card if you use it to pay for the hire. Worth checking so you don't pay out for extra insurance you don't need or to check you are indeed covered.

If you travel regularly and want this cover, buy it directly from an insurer. Personal Accident Insurance is very cheap due to the policy limitations, so it's not at all cost effective to buy multiple short term policies.

If you wish to find a car hire excess insurance policy which includes this cover - run a quote and, once you have your table of results, click on the filter button at the top and select 'Personal Accident Cover' from the options. Do bear in mind that sometimes policies only cover the driver and not the passengers.
