Though you can drive in America on your normal UK licence, the FCO recommends obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP). It is certainly worth checking the terms of your rental as, particularly in Florida where it was briefly a legal requirement last year, the IDP may be specified as needed.

Car hire excess insurance: most car hire through our site will include full CDW/TP and 3rd party cover, but as the norm in America is to transfer your own car insurance onto the rental car, it's not always built in so do check. In any event we would recommend comparing the cost of additional insurance to cover any excess or things that aren't covered like the tyres, windscreen and underside of the vehicle.

Third party liability cover will be supplied with the car in most states - but in a few, including Ohio, New Jersey, Florida and California it is not always - so pay careful attention to ensure what is included. Watch out for the term state minimum. Curiously in a country with such high medical costs, state minimum third party insurance limits can be very low. For example in Florida the minimum is $10,000 for bodily injury to one person. So if you were at fault in a serious accident and only had state minimum cover you could be exposed to a significant liability claim.

Buying a car hire insurance policy with Supplementary Liability Insurance (SLI) cover can raise the 3rd party liability limit to a more comfortable $1m - although you do have to ensure that state minimum insurance is included by the rental company to get this level of cover.
