Winter Preparation
During the colder months of December to March, winter tyres should be fitted to any car. Most car hire firms include this in their standard rates.
Congestion Charges
Sweden has a congestion charge tax on Swedish registered vehicles entering central areas of Stockholm and Gothenburg. Charges are between SEK 8 and SEK 20 per visit depending on time and city. Unfortunately you can't pay as you go. Charges are passed back to the registered keeper of the vehicle on a monthly basis. These charges will then be passed on to you probably with a management fee (Hertz charge 20%). Refer to the terms of your rental for how your car hire company will manage these charges.
Mileage Policies
Most of the big names allow unlimited mileage within the rental, but some do have specified limits - typically 100km / day. If you are likely to exceed the allowance, do check how much it will affect the final bill as the extra charges can add up quite quickly.
Driving Licence requirements
A standard UK photocard licence or old style licence plus passport or International Driving Permit.
Insurances
Cars will normally include third party liability cover, collision damage waiver with an excess and theft protection waiver with excess. Additional insurances will be available at the desk to cover the excess and additional areas not covered by the waivers like tyres, underside of the vehicle and glass but you can generally get these much cheaper through our car hire excess insurance comparison service.
Differences in driving
Dipped headlights are compulsory during the day. Drink driving limits are lower than the UK.
This is the country that invented the "elk test" for car safety. They had good reason to, watch out for the warning signs.
Some towns have parking restrictions which vary according to the date - look out for signs saying "Datumparkering". It means on odd days of the month you can't park on the side of the road with odd numbers and on even days you can't park on the even numbered side of the road.
