Driving licence
You are required to have both an international driving permit and a Sri Lankan recognition permit to drive a hire car in Sri Lanka.
Insurance
Most car hire is provided with CDW insurance, but it does depend on the broker, car hire company and car chosen. Be sure you understand what insurances you are getting included and cover the areas you want covered with additional car hire excess insurance with or without collision damage waiver and supplementary liability insurances.
Limited mileage allowances It is not unusual for car hire to have limited mileage allowances - 100-150 km per day is not unusual. Be sure to budget for any additional kilometres you are likely to need or select a hire agreement without a limit.
Road conditions
According to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office driving conditions are challenging in Sri Lanka with the main issues being poor road maintenance and bad driving. There are a number of areas you are advised to avoid completely.
