An international-driving-permit may be required for car hire in New Caledonia - check the terms of your car hire but it may be desirable to have one just in case anyway.
Though certainly not the cheapest place in the world to hire a car, there is a comprehensive choice of vehicles available.
Some have limited mileage allowances - SiXT for example may limit you to 150km per day so, if you are likely to cover significant distances, factor in the excess mileage charges.
Cars normally come with full damage and loss waivers and third party insurance but excesses on the waivers can be high. Theft waiver excesses may be double the size of damage waivers and a €4,000 excess is not uncommon even on a modest compact car. You will also be held accountable for damage to tyres, windscreens, glass and underside of the vehicle so it's worth sorting out comprehensive car hire excess insurance before you go as it's much cheaper than at the desk.
