Both the AA and Foreign & Commonwealth Office recommend having an international driving licence to show alongside your UK driving licence when you hire in Montenegro.

Winter tyres must be fitted between 15th November and 1st of April. Some car hire firms will include this in the rates, some make it a compulsory additional charge - as this can be €5 per day it can have a significant effect on the overall cost of renting a car.

Dipped headlights should be used at all times.

You may not overtake or pass school buses when they stop to allow children to get on or off.

The drink drive limit in Montenegro is much lower than the UK at 0.03% rather than 0.08%.

Most car hire includes unlimited mileage, but there are exceptions - SiXT has in the past only allowed 100 km / day if booked direct (though there's an unlimited mileage upgrade), yet often include unlimited mileage when booked through brokers like Auto Europe.

It's not hard to find the 1st additional driver thrown in for free, several companies do this, which could save money if you need the additional driver, or simply increase convenience if you'd prefer to have a 2nd driver but aren't prepared to pay more for it.

Most cars come with collision damage & theft waivers with the usual exclusions of tyres, windows and underside of the car and excesses tend to be around the euro;700-euro;1000 mark for modest cars, though expect more for SUV, luxury or people carriers. Purchasing car hire excess insurance through the MoneyMaxim site can save 80-90% of the cost of doing so at the hire desk.

We understand the minimum third party insurance in Montenegro to be €550,000 for personal injury and €300,000 for damage to property though we've seen lower limits mentioned in rental terms.
