According to the Foreign & Commonweath Office you can drive using a UK Licence. The AA recommend an international-driving-permit as it may save you having to acquire a temporary local licence.
Car hire normally comes together with collision damage and theft waivers and third party insurance cover. Damage waivers often have excesses which, although by European standards aren't particularly high (€600 or so on a modest compact car is fairly typical) are still enough to make car hire excess insurance well worth looking at. Especially as the car hire excess policies will cover vulnerable parts of the car that are often excluded from the cdw policy. Many also offer additional cover such as misfuelling, lost keys, towing costs or personal injury cover for that added bit of confidence.
