Car Hire in Macedonia

What to watch for with Macedonian car hire

Many car hire companies will allow an additional driver free of charge in Macedonia, some will allow more than one additional driver without an additional charge. This may be due in part to lower third party liability costs in Macedonia -more about this later.

Macedonia drives on the right, dipped headlights should be used at all times. Drink drive limits are lower than the UK (0.08%) at 0.05% alcohol and intoxicated passengers are not allowed in the front passenger seat either.

In winter months (15 November and 15 March) cars must either use winter tyres or have snow chains available to use with summer tyres. Minimum tread depths also apply. While some car hire companies include winter preparation in the season free of charge, others will make it a compulsory additional charge - often around € 5 per day.

Car hire excesses tend to be around the € 500 - € 850 range for a modest compact car but can be double that or more for a larger 4x4 or people carriers. Tyres, windows and underside of the vehicles will also be excluded unless you pay more for additional cover. Large savings can normally be made on additional waivers by comparing car hire insurance.

Macedonia is normally included in car hire excess insurance territorial definitions of Europe so there is normally no need to purchase a Worldwide policy,

As mentioned earlier, third party liability costs are lower in Macedonia than other European countries. Most European countries have quite high statutory minimum levels of third party cover - typically €5,000,000 and sometimes considerably more or unlimited. This level of insurance is more expensive but of course also gives you, as the driver, greater cover and security should the worst happen.

Many car rental companies don't make it that easy to see how much third party cover they provide before you've made a firm booking. Of those that do, SiXT offer € 50,000 of cover and Hertz € 200,000 these are rates found booking directly rather than through another broker which may be different.

You can increase this cover to US $1,000,000 by purchasing Supplementary Liability Insurance but make sure you select a policy valid for rentals in all countries except your home country as SLI cover is often restricted to just the USA & Canada.
