An international driving permit is recommended by the AA. Though perhaps not necessary, individual car rental companies may expect one.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office warn that driving standards are poor and hazards include animals on the road (especially at night) and armed car jacking. Do make sure you have taken all precautions and sought advice before hiring a car in Lesotho as it is not for the feint-hearted!

Most car hire in Maseru comes with Collision Damage and Theft Waivers with relatively modest excesses by European standards. That may still leave you liable for around £1000 or so of any damage to the car and also for any damage to windows, tyres and underbody of the car.
