France has everything, from beaches to mountains, huge sporting events such as the Tour de France, history and culture abounding. It's also a large country and well connected with a great road system so it's not surprising that car rental is so popular. Many visitors like to combine a city break with time in the country or by the sea. And what better way to achieve this than with a hire car?
You will find car rental in France available in all shapes and sizes, from micro minis through open top jeeps to the largest family car.
Be aware though that whilst French car rental comes with collision damage waiver and third party insurance you are still likely to be liable for an enormous excess (€1500 is typical) and for any damage to the tyres, wheels, underbody and roof. If you are heading off up a mountain or towards a beach you can find the road surface is often potholed and gritty - which means third party insurance policies such as those offered by MoneyMaxim are very popular, as they cover both excesses and these extra areas.

Also be wary of fuel policies - companies in France are starting to insist upon a full to empty fuel policy where you are charged for a full tankful at pickup (often at more than pump price rate) and not refunded if you do not use it all. If you are looking at a shorter hire period or do not plan to use the car much this can be expensive so look to use a company that has a fairer approach such as full to full.
