  • Excess Insurance covers the excess for both bodywork damage and theft claims. Select this when Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), Theft Protection (TP) and Third Party Liability Insurance (TPLI) cover are already provided with your car hire, but where you are responsible for a large excess and/or you want cover for the glass, underbody, roof and tyres/wheels of the vehicle.

  • Excess and CDW will provide excess reimbursement as above, but also cover you if you have no CDW or TP. Most car rental agreements include CDW, although if you are renting a car directly in the Americas you may find you are renting a car with no CDW cover. Some car hire firms can also make it optional (Sixt do with some rentals through their website). CDW and TP is sometimes referred to as Loss Damage Waiver (LDW).

  • Excess, CDW and SLI provide excess reimbursement, CDW and TP as above, but also cover you if you have limited liability insurance. SLI is secondary insurance designed to add to any liability insurance your car rental company may provide, and typically increases your liability insurance to a total of US$1m. Normally only required in the Americas, although exceptionally elsewhere. Some, but not all, policies will provide a lower level of primary insurance in the event that the law of a US state deems the policy to provide primary liability coverage.
